Mayflower Compact- roots of self-government or justification to settle on Native American land?
In this assignment, you are to post your thoughts about whether the Mayflower Compact was the precursor to self-government or justification to settle an invade Native American land. Please write 2-3 sentences to express your view point.
I think the Mayflower Compact was just the European settlers excuse to settle and eventually take Native American land. How can this document be legitimate when they had devised this contract to have "self-rule" but this land actually belonged to other people. This document became a precedent for Europeans to falsify documents to take Native American lands.
I strongly disagree! This document actually set a precedent for self-government in the U.S. and is the foundation for the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution. Without this document, we would not have the basis for self-rule or know the formal contract that enables this type of government. This was not justification for stealing Native American land, but rather gave the Europeans the right to govern without the King's authority.
